Margaret Tate is an executive editor of a book publishing company. After knowing that she is about to be deported back to Canada due to the violation of her work visa, she then persuades her assistant, Andrew Paxton to marry her to gain citizenship. She then threats him that if she deports back to Canada, he will lose his dream on becoming an editor. However, Mr. Gilbertson, an immigration agent suspect them of committing fraud. Thus, he questioned them separately.

The "couple" then travelled to Andrew's hometown to meet his family. When they reached Alaska, Margaret then noticed that most of the shops there were own by his family and has some positive feelings towards him. During the welcoming home party, he then announced that he is engaged to Margaret. However, his father, Joe was against towards the marriage. 

Margaret and Andrew spend some time in Alaska and this is when their love story begins. During the wedding ceremony, Margaret confronts everybody about their fake marriage and went back to America. This is when Andrew and his family realised he really loves her and follows her back to America to tell the truth.
